We are happy to anounce that “Das Geheimnis meines Turbans“ (orig. span. El secreto de mi turbante) by Nadia Ghulam und Agnes Rotger; published in Germany by cbt is nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2022!
Nadia Ghulam was born in in Kabul. In her book she tells her story, how she disguised herself as a boy to earn a living for her family.
Under the Taliban, women were not allowed to work. When after the death of her brother and due to the illness of her father there is no male family member left, who could care for the familiy, she slips into the role of her brother. For years she lived in fear of being discovered.
Since she lives in Europe, where she wrote her book with the help of the Spanish journalist Agnès Rotger, she has been campaigning for refugees, not only from Afghanistan. She is also a tireless advocate against the oppression of women and girls and has already received several awards for her commitment.
