Peces gordos is a thrilling novel that treats topics of current importance such as the protection of the species and environmental conservation wrapped up in a gripping crime plot.
As she has been living on three different continents so far, 12-year-old Pilar is quite used to changing her place of residence. For that reason, she doesn’t even feel nervous when her mum announces that soon they will move from their hometown Cologne to Patagonia. Before they leave for Argentina, Pilar’s biology teacher tells her about the mysterious “salmon dolphin”, a species in danger of extinction that can only be found in Patagonia. When she arrives at her new school, Pilar soon detects that there is something odd going on in the building. Luckily, she gets to know the outsider Diego, who quickly becomes her best friend (and even a bit more). One afternoon, the two of them witness some white-dressed men unloading something strange in the schoolyard. Together, they decide to get to the bottom of the mysterious happenings at their school, but when they follow the strangers to the Chilean border, they soon recognize that the case is much more serious than either of them could have imagined. To make matters even worse, the tyrannical siblings Emilio and Emilia won’t stop harassing Pilar and Diego at school and keep them from concentrating on their investigations. Close to unravelling the mystery, Pilar and Diego realize that they have put themselves in great danger …
